We're going poemananas!

Hello again!

So much has happened since the blog and you last spoke. 3rd, 6th, and 8th graders have been working hard on their end of the year publications (we'll have cd's from grades 3 and 6, and a book from grade 8).

In 3rd and 6th grade today, we read an excerpt from A.R. Ammons' Tape for the Turn of the Year - a poem written entirely on a roll of adding machine tape (basically a really long, continuous, coiled, skinny piece of paper). We thought, how does what we write ON affect what and how we write? And another important question - how fun is it to write a poem on a toilet paper roll? (Answer: LOTS)

So, in 3rd grade, we wrote poems on doilies, toilet paper rolls, old receipts, post-it's, scraps of felt, and more - basically we poemed around the house. Here are a few highlights:

I love this one!

This is a poem, written by Sabrina, on a long piece of silk ribbon (she wrote in red marker, which kind of bled a little and added to the effect of the poem.):
Gushing red from her white silk dress. Coming from the heart. Red, Red, Red. All going through her mind. last thoughts. last words. Red, Red, Red. Gone, Gone, Gone. Weeps everywhere. puddles of tears. Wish Wish. Please Please. S t a y. Stay. No. No. Last words she heard. Not kept but alive. Where going? Nobody's knowing. Keep keep. Miss miss miss. Bye Bye.

Smallest poem ever? Probably pretty close. This one's by Natalia.

In 6th grade, we wrote poemananas (poems on bananas, obviously). See Brittany above with her lovely creation. Then, we ate them!

Next Thursday, a special poetry reading event will be happening at Alcott Elementary. Watch the blog for more details!!

In Flower

3rd and 6th graders read William Carlos Williams' "A Locust Tree in Flower," looked at trees and imagined these poems:

Small world

There is a little world
on every single raindrop, trees
of every kind, falls slowly to the
ground, people all around, living
in the trees of every kind, a
town of twigs, people covered with
a leaf, sun of rain.

Oh, the paper birch tree in the winter you wear a white shirt, but you don't get to enjoy it because you are asleep. In the spring you wear light green. In the summer you are wearing green. Enjoy these amazing pantoums, written last week by Alcott student poets!

Nothing else good for me
it's too salty
or too peppery
your words are hard to take

it's too salty
too many lies
your words are hard to take
I'm starving for truths

too many lies
what I hear is not too refreshing
I'm starving for truths
is there nothing more than this?

- Jasmine T. (8th)

Dancing on a cloud
when you're moon walking
seeing something like everybody is dancing
when you're dancing you will feel good

dancing on a cloud
when you see a mist you feel like
dancing on a cloud
kaboom, click, beep you hear

dancing on a cloud
'cause a bird is dancing
dancing on a cloud
get funky with your
self right now!

- Andrew (6th)

I dreamed of a dream
That was concealed in a bean
I placed it on the ground
And every body in town.

That was concealed in a bean
That had a troublesome dream
And every body in town
gathered around.

That had a troublesome dream
The little green seed
gathered around.
To see that little green bean turn red.

- Amante (6th)

Because I walk across the water
I think that I am dreaming
I skip and run and jump up and down
and see if its misleading

I think that I am dreaming
of a wonderful place to go
and see if its misleading
the reflection of the sunset i see it glow

of a wonderful place to go
I wish I could be there all day
the reflection of the sun set I see it glow
and it's a wonderful place to stay

- Krystal L. (8th)

The clouds are bright
so are you
and so am I
you are nice

the clouds are bright
we like you
you are nice
we are too

we like you
you are nice
we are too
everyone likes you

- Mohammed (3rd)

I watch the birds fly over the horizon
but the birds never see me
because I am hiding in the trunk of a willow tree
nobody is here except me

but the birds still never see me
I am waiting for the big rabbit
but nobody is here except me.
I can feel the wind in my hair

I am still waiting for the big rabbit
I am getting hungry and tired
I like to feel the wind in my hair
then the big rabbit comes but I'm
fast asleep.

- Delaney (3rd)

I smell burning squirrels
burning, burning
I smell guts!
I taste meat!

burning, burning
A runover squirrel!
I taste meat!
I eat and eat

A runover suirrel
It tastes good!
I eat and eat
I am happy

- Joe (3rd)

The bird flew in the morning sky
He wishes he wasn't alone
His wings soar reaching for the peaks
He sees every one

He wishes he wasn't alone
A sign of hope comes
He sees everyone
He soars and soars

A sign of hope comes
Happiness comes
He soars and soars
He has freedom

- Ezekiel O. (8th)

yellow leaves flow around your head
because the wind blows them around
red ones crunch under your feet
they get stuck in your hair

Because the wind blows them around
they make a carpet on the ground
red ones crunch under your feet
this is the third day of fall

they make a carpet on the ground
a magic flying carpet
this is the third day of fall
this is the third day of fall.

- Avery (3rd)

When the room is going around
Falling on pillows
Looking at the light
and going to sleep.

Falling on pillows
looking at my sister
Going to sleep
dreaming about pizza

Looking at my sister
she's eating apples
dreaming about pizza
My mom came and brought me pizza.

- Anthony T. (6th)

I'm like the sunshine in your heart
You make me feel as sweet as a pea
when you say I love you I feel like a peach.
When you're around me the world means nthing to me.

You make me feel as sweet as a pea
We feel the breeze through our feet
When you're around me the world means nothing to me.
You always take me for who I am

We feel the breeze through our feet
We dance we sing to the beat
You always take me for who I am
I wish you were here to hear how I feel.

- Darliah (6th)

The shiny sun is shiny
The Earth has water
The moon is dark
The sun is light to me

The Earth has water
Dark and light
The sun is light to me
Earth is cool

Dark and light
Earth is cool
Earth is cool
and Sun and Moon

We're Dreaming

On a dreamy day last week, we read Richard Hugo's "In Your Wild Dream" and wrote our own dream poems.

You imagine
Ummmm that sandwich is good
Watch the clouds
Wishing, wishing
Wishing you could go to sleep on the clouds
A wonderful day, the best picnic everything
Oh an ant hill
marching, marching
Oh no you're shrinking
The ants are the same size
as you
Do you know if this is a dream
or a nightmare
POOF
These clouds aren't as comfortable
as I thought
I wish I was just sleeping now

- Brandon S. (8th)

You are walking, on a street with many people.
You look around, now everyone is gone.
Now you are in the sky, flying with wings.
You enjoy the flight, but your wings disappear.
You plummet down, down, down into an ocean.
You hit the water, but feel no impact.
You struggle for breath, until you hit the bottom.
You can breath. A shark lunges for you, but an octopus grabs you first.
Struggling in its grasp, it throws you upward. You hit the surface but keep flying
You hit the moon, and it says to you, "Only a dream, a dream."

- Daniel O. (8th)

Cream Pool

We are at the pool I walk
on to the diving board. You feel
like a skyscraper all the way
at the top. When we all jump
into a big vanilla river. We jump
off the cherries that was
way high up. The rainbow
shine from the banana. It had rained chocolate
and strawberry syrup with sprinkles. We
rain under the bowl. That is when
you open your eyes and you
were in the car.

- Tasia S. (6th)

In My Dream

I am in the ocean and riding a
shark. Eating nails too snails.
Climbing a tree in the forest.
Grabbing a fish which turns into a
degu. Watching him running away
and turning into a caveman.
Riding dinosaurs in the sky. Other
cave men running with their big
bats. Jumping off the dinosaurs and
going into a wrestling ring. Holding
a bat with barbed wire. Hitting
everyone and winning the heavyweight
championship belt. Waking up
with my throat hurting from
screaming too much and missing
school.

- Anthony T. (6th)

my dream

you were walking on a beach, then you were on a giant bird. The wind from the birds wings turned into a tornado and I was carried all around the world until I landed in the water. I was hit by the nose of a narwhal, his nose turned into a rock of a dark cave. I fell through a hole and I landed on a bed. It was your bed in your room.

- Ben K. (3rd)

You pull the covers over your
head. In your sleep,
you're in a mini-van.
The car transforms into a stage set. Jonas brothers music
fills the stage. Nick Jonas
walks backstage you fall
into the library. He is
leaning sadly there. Step one step
front. Alarms go off. Nick
pulls a book, alarms stop.
You ask what's wrong. He
tells. You get his email. NickJonas
@gmail.com. A package falls where
you stood, earlier. A reply to
your fan mail. Joe Jonas
appears. He steps onto the
carpet. He floats away.
Nick and I both step,
floating together away, unfortunately.

With Love

At Alcott today, poems were full of love!

The third graders read from Arnold Adoff's Love Letters and wrote epistle poems (poems in the form of a letter) to give away as Valentines. I'm sure they will most defiinitely be enjoyed by their lucky recipients.

6th graders and 8th graders listened to two poems by Sonia Sanchez, A Poem for Jesse and To P.J. and wrote poems addressed to people whom they love or are inspired by; poems to friends, family members, their own selves...

6th grade

a poem for Maya

your smile like
a newly bloomed
flower
your touch like
clouds
rubbing my face
My LOVE FOR YOU
is more than
GOD
Loves the whole
wide world.

-Stephanie T.

I can float over the

I am smart I am me.

A poem to grandma

your cookies are like
butter melting on my tongue
gets hot when I swallow it
and drink your home made lemonade.

- Anthony T.

8th grade

Dear Giovanni

Every noise the world makes
is a song of you.
The smile you share
is like when you stick your
head out the car window
on the high way the joy
you give is like the joy
on a kids face when the
Jack pops from the box.

- Jessica M.
